Door knob pumpkins

There's nothing better than walking into a craft store at this time of year and seeing rows and rows of pumpkins. They come in all shapes and sizes - and often in many different colors, too. And some of them are pretty realistic looking. But others? Well, let's just say some are better than others. Sometimes I'll find the shape of a pumpkin I love, but I'm just not crazy about the faux finish or the fake looking stem coming out of it. But it's easy to customize these inexpensive pumpkins and make them your own.

Here's what you'll need for this project:
  • faux plastic pumpkins, any size
  • acrylic paints in several tones of orange
  • foam paint brushes
  • door knobs
  • craft wire
  • hot glue and a hot glue gun
Remove the stem from your pumpkin. Some will pop right out, and others might require scissors or a knife. Be sure not to make too big of a hole when you take it out because you'll need a place to glue the door knob to later. Then paint your pumpkins using foam brushes and a variety of different paint colors to make them look realistic. Take your time and blend the colors until you get the look you like. Let them dry completely.

Now it's time for my favorite craft tool, the old reliable glue gun. Glue a decorative knob to the top of each pumpkin. Use brown craft wire to tie around the knobs, curling the ends around a pencil or your finger.

I use three of mine as a fall centerpiece on my kitchen table. They sit on a large wooden cutting board that I found at an antique store and are surrounded by a wreath of fall berries and mini pumpkins.

Here they are piled into a square glass vase.

How would you use these fun pumpkins in your home?

  1. Fun project! I always see great knobs like that and think they'd be great in a project but have no idea what to do with them.
